A RESOLUTION OF THE DUKE STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Expressing Support for A Rate Exception for The Refectory to Maintain Its Management Under Bon Vivant Catering (Despite a Likely Negative Impact on the “Dining Fee”)

WHEREAS, “The Refectory at Duke Divinity School” is one of the most popular eateries among the Duke undergraduate population under its current management, Bon Vivant Catering;

WHEREAS, “The Refectory at Duke Divinity School” under the management of Bon Vivant Catering has been recognized by the Duke community for its culinary excellence through numerous awards since its founding, including winning Duke University’s “Culinary Gold Award” and the Duke Chronicle’s “People’s Choice Award” for Best Food on Campus for each of the last five years;

WHEREAS, “The Refectory at Duke Dining School” under its current management has effectively created a successful atmosphere of community-based dining at Duke towards which all of our eateries, including those inside our future West Union, should aspire;

WHEREAS, the Duke community cannot afford a potential deterioration in the quality of our food offerings at this juncture immediately prior to the West Union Renovations, which will significantly reduce dining options on campus;

WHEREAS, “The Refectory at Duke Divinity School” under Bon Vivant Catering’s management has committed itself to many of the values towards which our institution is committed, including supporting local and sustainable agriculture and fair living wages for its staff, as evidenced by “The Refectory at Duke Divinity School’s” participation in the Duke University “Food Course” this Spring;

WHEREAS, “The Refectory at Duke Divinity School’s” future on campus has been threatened in light of their unwillingness to abide by the DSG-supported Student Affairs mandate that all eateries pay a standardized 15% commission rate to Duke Dining;

BE IT RESOLVED: That the Duke Undergraduate student body would rather pay the commensurate necessary increase and/or forgone decrease in the undergraduate dining fee than have The Refectory at Duke Divinity School depart from campus and/or change ownership away from Bon Vivant Catering;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That Duke undergraduates strongly encourage Bon Vivant Catering to make some additional financial sacrifices through some rate increases beyond 10% commission, out of fairness to the Duke undergraduate student population and the other eateries on campus, who are effectively subsidizing their operation through the fee and commissions respectively.

Respectfully submitted,

Pete Schork

DSG President

Alex Swain

DSG President-elect

Passed by unanimous consent April 24, 2012.

Exercise your right to VOTE for DSG president!

In the words of junior JJ Englander, “Less than half of the student body votes. Be part of the good looking half.”

Here’s a message from Senator Marcus Benning:
On behalf of the Duke Student Government and the Durham and Regional Affairs Committee, I would like to extend an invitation for you to attend DSG’s annual Staff Appreciation Day event.On Friday April 13th, The Durham & Regional Affairs Committee will host Staff Appreciation Day.  This two part event will include a card marking event on the plaza from 11am to 1pm and a mini-reception in the Mary Lou Williams Center at 2pm. Both events will be catered. This year’s theme for Staff Appreciation Day is honoring those whose silent efforts speak volumes in making our Duke experience one of excellence. This is our opportunity to celebrate the staff members that make our Duke experience both seamless and enjoyable.We hope to see you there!
